Leo Coyte’s Mystic Misfits presents a series of new paintings that construct an absurd open-ended narrative, giving rise to a collection of protagonists derived from a subconscious assemblage of fictions, memories and teenaged anxieties. In these works the push-and-pull of Coyte’s playful process draws on the painterly potential of formal incongruity, merging realistic renderings of semi-figurative objects and bodies with bursts of colour and abstraction. He imparts a sense of celebratory irreverence through his art making process by mining and refashioning bits and pieces of the various painting traditions that interest him.
