Vicky Browne

New Sound Works

For Vicky Browne, sound is present in every artwork. Try to turn off your ears; there are no lids to shut. When stuffing your ears you are conscious of the stuffing (exterior intrusion). In these new works Browne has focused on the stuffing – the sound of the stuffing or the sound produced when stuffing. The sound of stuff is played out. A variety of materials have been employed – wood, foam, copper, leather, clay and steel – much found in Browne’s home environment, a wok from the kitchen and sticks from the garden. These are combined to produce works where sound is the focus, less by transmission but rather by indication, implication or insinuation.
