Andrew Sullivan

Silent Film

Andrew Sullivan is a renowned portrait painter of prominent Australians and a past winner of the Sulman Prize. For this solo exhibition Sullivan has turned to actors of the silent film era, depicting a cast of characters from a lost, forgotten, or perhaps yet to be written story. Referencing film studio promotional images and influenced by Japanese kabuki, the gaze of each subject in the series is intense – a word never leaves the lips of these players, but their names, faces and demeanour are there to express their present state of being.
