James Lieutenant is an Australian visual artist living and working in Sydney and Canberra. Mainly using painting and screen print, his art practice is focused on in-between spaces. Creating idiosyncratic and often puzzling imagery, Lieutenant is interested in the space between digital and analogue, abstract and representational art.
Over the last 7 years, Lieutenant has been experimenting, constructing and perfecting a wholly unique screen print process. Using layering to build up a foggy haze of colour, each screen print is a unique and heavily laboured object. The surface of his artworks becomes crucial to their reading. The materiality is often unclear, his paintings look like screen prints and his screen-prints look like paintings.
